A figure sits up in bed, head in their hands, awakened in the middle of the night. Nine swords hang on the wall behind them, like the dark thoughts tormenting them. The blanket is rumpled; the insomnia is unmistakable. Nighttime anxiety, rumination that grows in the dark, fears that look like monsters at three in the morning and shrink to nothing at dawn.
Air
The sign (upright): Anxiety, insomnia, dark thoughts that come for you at night. This card recognizes your mental pain without minimizing it: you are going through real distress. But it also reminds you that night exaggerates everything. What seems like a catastrophe at three in the morning can become a manageable problem by noon. Do not believe everything your mind tells you when it is afraid. Seek support, speak with someone, take the thoughts out of your head and put them on the table. The swords on the wall look like nine, but perhaps they are only three worries repeated three times. Daylight brings perspective. Your lighthouse has not gone out; fog has only covered it.
“My nighttime fears are not the truth. Dawn reduces them to what they truly are: passing thoughts that do not define me.”
Shadow prompt
Three in the morning. The mind spins. How much of what you fear has already happened, how much is still to come, and how much will never happen?
A symbolic gesture
Before sleeping, write everything worrying you on a piece of paper. Put it in a drawer. Close the drawer. Tell yourself: it is written down. The night is not for this. Read it tomorrow. In sunlight, almost everything weighs less.
